My Favorite References To Other Properties

My Favorite References To Other Properties

It always puts a smile on my face when I am playing a videogame or reading a comic for example and it makes a reference to another piece of pop culture. So I want to make a list of my favorite of these references.

Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt
This game has a couple of really good ones within it like a great reference to Fight Club when you face the champion of the Novigrad fight ring named Durden the Tailor.  But the one I am going to focus on is a mission called “Of Swords and Dumplings”.  You walk into a dumpling restaurant and meet the owner Eibhear Hattori.  Hattori is a struggling Dumpling cook who hides the fact that he is the a master swordsmith.  And in the upstairs of his restaurant he keeps “memories” of his former life.  Sound familiar?  If you have seen Kill Bill it should.  Because the character is a reference to the legendary sword maker Hattori Hanzo from the movies.

Borderlands 2
Another game series that has a ton of pop culture references hidden within it’s many hours of gameplay.  But I am going to talk about the mission “Splinter Group”.  This mission has you go into the sewers to lure out a group of four ninjas named Ralph, Lee, Mick, and Dan who are lead by their boss Flinter.  And the best part is that you use pizza to lure them out.  That’s right it’s a truly awesome reference to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Lunar: Silver Star Story
In this amazing old school RPG you travel all over a beautiful fantasy world to become a dragon master and stop the evil that is emerging.  But when you go to a magic flying city you must go through a cave of trials if you want to officially enter the city.  While wandering the cave you come across a man who has been trapped for years and talks like a certain Mike Meyers secret agent.  It makes for a funny interaction with a random character.  And while it is a dated reference to Austin Powers it manages to bring some light heartedness to a difficult dungeon.

Red Dead Redemption
This is a little more obscure but in the game Red Dead Redemption if you attain a high enough wanted level in single player the US Marshals will be sent after you.  And once the Marshals are after you if you can evade them while riding a Hungarian Half-Bred horse which is a white horse you will get an achievement called “Heading South On A White Bronco” which is a subtle reference to the car chase of OJ Simpson in the early nineties.  Like I said it is a little obscure because a gamer born after a certain point in time will not get this reference very easily.

National Treasure
Now this one I can not prove it is the reference I feel it is, but it is too much of a coincidence for me to ignore.  In the film National Treasure Diana Kruger plays Nick Cage’s former girlfriend named Abigail Chase who joins Cage and his cohort as they track down a treasure that most people believe doesn’t exist.  The same name as the blonde haired treasure hunter main character of Danger Girl Comics.  Like I said, I don’t know if this is actually true.  But I will say that I could see young Diana Kruger playing Abby Chase in a movie adaptation of the comic series.
